Rene Lalique Bowls: Tournon R Lalique Bowl Coupe At Auction

August 30th, 2009

Rene Lalique Bowl Tournon circa 1928 has appeared online at auction in apparent great condition with a low starting price of $99 with no reserve.

Rene Lalique Bowl TournonThe tournon bowl coupe is a reasonably rare and large R Lalique bowl model. The Monument Colorado seller states:

“It is in GREAT condition with NO: chips, fleabites or damage. The interior shows a couple of light scratches. This piece has the rare raised (not etched) “R. LALIQUE FRANCE” hallmark circa 1928.”

This great R Lalique bowl coupe, if you get it, is definitely on the “pick it up in person” list. Here’s why.

Pikes Peak Photo by David ShankboneMonument Colorado is a small town just north of the U.S. Air Force Academy, a place, including the Chapel in the photo below, not unfamiliar to this writer. It’s between Colorado Springs (also NORAD, Cheyenne Mountain, Pikes Peak) and Denver. History and scenery are all over this great area in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. For example, in 1893, the 33 year old college professor Katherine Lee Bates headed to Colorado Springs to teach a summer course at Colorado College. While there, she went to the top of Pikes Peak; no easy feat traveling most of the way up the mountain in a horse drawn wagon and then riding a mule and walking to get to the top. She was so inspired when she reached the summit (over 14,000 feet above sea level), she wrote a poem upon returning to her hotel, entitled America.

Air Force Academy ChapelBates would later recount, “….. I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.” Her poem America was first published on July 4th 1895 in a church publication called The Congregationalist. By 1910, the words of the poem were combined with a tune written by a church organist and choir director, Samuel A. Ward. The combination quickly caught on with the public and the song is as popular today in the United States as it ever has been.

And if this history of the area isn’t enough to entice you, it is also rumored that this Tournon Bowl Coupe is the very bowl coupe that then candidate Barack Obama was talking about when he made his infamous remarks about his embarrassment of fellow Americans and their language skills!

This bowl coupe has it all! And by the way, if you go to the top of Pikes Peak, you’ll know why Ms. Bates was so inspired. The name we know for the poem turned song, written by the impressionable traveling college professor over 100 years ago? America The Beautiful! And here is the man, the late great Ray Charles bringing home America The Beautiful as only he could.

A big bowl with a great Rene Lalique design at a great starting price. Check the bowl coupe out thoroughly as usual But if you get it, maybe plan a few days to go get it!

And if anyone in the U.S. wants to augment their single phrase foreign language skills with a second expression that might come in handy when traveling, the caption on the President Obama video “Zut Alors” is French! It roughly translates into a very mild expletive like “darn” or “what the heck!”. Hmmmmmmm.

Rene Lalique Boxes: Saint-Nectaire Covered R Lalique Box at Auction

August 12th, 2009

The Rene Lalique Box Saint-Nectaire has appeared in apparent great condition at auction online with a starting price of $9.99 and no reserve!

Lalique Box Saint NectaireA nice looking circa 1925 Lalique Box Saint-Nectaire showed up on Ebay this morning, from a high volume seller (a consignment store) with good feedback, starting at just under $10 and no reserve! The seller states:

“This is a No Reserve Auction! Measures approx. 3″ Diameter x 2” High. Marked on the bottom “R. LALIQUE, FRANCE”. Excellent displayed condition with no chips, cracks or signs of repair.”

The shipping charges seem reasonable ($8 and change to Arizona), but the seller says they will not ship international. Of course, most anyone has a friend in the US that can take delivery and forward the box if you live in a far flung place and just have to have this box!

Lalique Box Saint NectaireOf particular note (or vague esoteric interest if you are not into the details) is that the Lalique Box Saint-Nectaire is the only production Maison Lalique box in the shape of a hexagon! That’s six sides for anyone that skipped geometry class in high school. To top it off, it appears from the photos to be a ‘regular hexagon”; six equal sides of course! Hmmmmmmm. No, we aren’t moving on to the Pythagorean theorem (Pythagoras’ theorem across the pond) … enough geometry for now.

Geometric considerations aside, it looks like a good opportunity for you Lalique box collectors that haven’t yet added this box to your collection.

The auction runs through August 18th. Here is a link to a saved/cached image version of the original 200372693037 listing online. Rene Lalique Ashtray Pelican in Opalescent Glass: A Great Lalique Auction Item!

Lalique Pelican AshtrayThe illusive RLalique Pelican Ashtray in opalescent glass has appeared at auction on Ebay. With a starting price of $65 and no reserve, it seems like a great opportunity to acquire one of the unique Rene Lalique Glass designs which is rarely seen at auction, and even more rarely comes out in opalescent Lalique glass.

The seller of this apparently great piece (remember the continuing caution to check it out for yourself) states: Some wear from use on the bottom. No chips or cracks. The seller has over 1000 feedbacks with 100% positive. Shipping is only $7.20 in the U.S.

If you buy this rare R Lalique ashtray, a summer trip to Nashville for a personal pick-up, and a few great stops like the Grand Old Opry, the Jack Daniels Distillery, or a great ride down the Cumberland River on the General Jackson Showboat, a 300 foot Paddlewheel Riverboat, would make the buying and the traveling well worth the purchase! Nashville is a cultural wonderland and one of the South’s amazing attractions. And who knows what other great R Lalique glass lurks in the shops along the waterfront!

July 17th, 2009

Rene Lalique Seal Moineau, a nice looking colored Lalique Cachet has appeared for sale online at auction with a low starting price and no reserve!

Rene Lalique Seal MoineauA great R Lalique seal, the Moineau Cache is a classic Rene Lalique design. This same Lalique seal was also affixed to a dish and sold as an ashtray, or as it’s called in Lalique’s mother country, a Rene Lalique Cendrier.

The U.S. seller of this great little item (a Michigander no less – see the recent Rene Lalique Car Mascots Post for a Michigander explanation) is a high feedback, 99.5% rated powerseller. He states “THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. NO CHIPS, CRACKS OR SCRATCHES.” He also provides a good number of photos so you can see for yourself. The starting price is $50 and no reserve, which makes this Lalique auction especially attractive for the apparently fresh to market Rene Lalique cachet.

And our usual caution applies: If you are considering bidding on this or any Rene Lalique antique item, check it out thoroughly! Look at everything from the condition to the signature, to the terms and the shipping costs, and the reputation and return policy of the seller. Everything! A little bit of diligence goes a long way toward avoiding regrets.

This fabulous Lalique perfume bottle is circa 1912, and it’s molded LALIQUE, nicely on the underside of the base.

Lalique Glass Inkwell (Encrier) Cover: The Rene Lalique Cernay Inkwell At Auction: Sans Ink, Sans Well!

May 31st, 2009

Rene Lalique Glass Inkwell Cover For Cernay InkwellRene Lalique Glass Cover to the R Lalique inkwell Cernay (Catalogue Raisonne Number 437) has appeared at auction advertised as a Small Lalique Glass Bowl! Hmmmmmm. A better caption to this photo would be: “How Do You Make The Bottom Of An Inkwell Disappear?” Now that’s a question the Oracle himself might ask! Inquiring minds might ask: How does the seller even know it’s Lalique glass?

The starting price is $0.99 (that’s ninety nine cents) and no reserve! Maybe the seller really is mrmeshugener! Seriously, this is the seller’s Ebay ID, we can’t make this stuff up!

Rene Lalique Glass Inkwell Cernay Without CoverHere is a ink to a cached version of the Ebay Item: 320378153310***.

Several of the Rene Lalique Inkwells have plain covers that weren’t decorated. But the Cernay is one model where Lalique used the cover as an integral part of the design of the piece. So unlike some other R Lalique inkwell covers, this cover is not interchangeable with any other model inkwell.

Rene Lalique Glass Inkwell CernayOn the other hand, if you have the topless Lalique Inkwell Cernay shown above, and you match up the Cernay Cover from MrMeshugener, you will be in Cernay Heaven (hence the expression “A Match Made In Heaven”), as shown here!

Good luck, and if you get it all done, we’ll see you there, hopefully later rather than sooner.

Rene Lalique Plates: Lalique Glass Ondes Plate in Great Opalescent Glass – $19.99 No Reserve – R Lalique Online

May 17th, 2009

Rene Lalique Grande Boule Lierre R Lalique VaseRene Lalique Plate Ondes Online: $19.99 No Reserve in Opalescent Glass! Lalique made a lot of tableware, and the R.Lalique Ondes Plate that appeared online this morning, 11 inches wide and opalescent glass, is a good example that is typical of the dizzying array of plates and dishes that poured out of the Lalique factory before World War II. Most of these designs were made in large numbers, and even with the high percentage of broken pieces over the years of use, handling and war, a good number still remain. Here online, is one such R Lalique survivor, in apparently good condition, and sporting the extremely reasonable starting price of under $20 without reserve from a high volume 100% feedback seller. This plate is listed as Ondes No. 2 in the R.Lalique Catalogue Raisonne. The R.Lalique number 10-3035 and is shown on page 721 of the 2004 (and latest) edition. This example is signed in block letters R. Lalique France. A seemingly good chance to pick up a solid example of Lalique glass tableware that was intended for daily use at a possible bargain price, subject of course, to where the bidding leads. 🙂 The auction ends on May 23rd.

May 12th, 2009

Rene Lalique Ashtray R Lalique Deux ZephyrsRene Lalique’s early ashtray (cendrier) Deux Zephyrs appeared online at auction this morning. Listed as a Lalique France Coaster Open Salt and sporting a starting price of $5 and no reserve, it seems like a great opportunity to get one of the first of the R Lalique ashtrays at a fair price (but probably more than $5. 🙂 The ashtray is signed on the underside R. Lalique France as shown here and is circa 1913. The description indicates the ashtray is in pretty good condition with the seller having over 1400 feedbacks at 99.6% positive, and a set shipping price in the U.S. of under $6.

Update: The sellers canceled their original listing and have re-listed the item on Ebay to correct the errors in their description as item number 320370910728. It’s now $9.99 no reserve. The new auction expires May 19th.

Rene Lalique Perfume Bottle Le Succes : Lalique for D’Orsay Online

May 4th, 2009

Rene Lalique Perfume Bottle Le Succes For D'OrsayLalique Perfume Bottle Le Succes by Rene Lalique for D’Orsay: The rare circa 1914 Lalique Perfume Bottle Le Succes, a commercial version of the great Maison Lalique Perfume Bottle Amphytrite, has appeared online in seemingly good order, from a Kentucky seller, with a starting bid of $30 and no reserve. Both the perfume bottle and the stopper are different than the Lalique Amphytrite bottle, but both are so close in design that the unmistakable relationship is very evident. Both stoppers feature a female figure, both bottoms feature a snail shell style design.

With the later addition in an addendum to their seminal work on Lalique Perfume Bottles (coincidentally titled Lalique Perfume Bottles) of another bottle that they have also catalogued as Le Succes, Glen and Mary Lou Utt have catalogued this perfume bottle as Le Succes (A).

Rene Lalique Perfume Bottle Le Succes For D'OrsayThe pictures in the online auction ad are not all that great, but the identity of the bottle is still discernible. All three photos from the online listing are shown here. The seller has near 400 feedbacks with a 100% rating. Hopefully (for the seller :), the seller is in the “smart seller” category we talk about here from time to time. We wrote the seller to get the condition particulars, and received this reply: The bottle has no chips or cracks. Having never seen another I am not sure if the pale green is true or faded. Thank you for asking. Carla. Later, the seller added: The letters are impossible to read in their entirety. The first letter is an “L” then it looks like a partial “A” and then the next letter looks like a partial L or “I” then nothing i can see and then “QUE”. I do not see “France”. And also: If this turns out to be a fake which I don’t think it is, I will just refund the purchaser their money. Neil Diamond would love this seller! But as always, check it out for yourself! The auction ends on May 9th.

Finally, we have an amazing number of Lalique Perfume Bottles references in the Rene Lalique Library online, including the book Lalique Perfume Bottles by the Utts, and as well as some great exhibition and auction catalogues from all over the world, with tons of R Lalique Perfumes pictured and referenced. These include not just Rene Lalique Perfume Bottles exhibitions around the world, but also the Sotheby’s Auction Catalogue which features the dispersal of the Utt’s own Lalique Perfume Bottles collection.

Oh …. Neil Diamond: Kentucky Woman – of course!

Rene Lalique Vase Bresse Signed R.LaliqueHow great are these guys. Over 7000 feedbacks, 99.9% positive. So, they come up with the sharp little R Lalique Vase Bresse in a striking and rare Lalique color, and here it is at $9.99 starting bid and going to the highest bidder. Looks pretty clean too from the photos, except for one issue about what appears to be a very short factory wandering line, which they have shown in the photos in their listing, and which we asked about, and are awaitng further details, which will be added to this post when we get them. Of course, as always, fully check this vase out for yourself if you are interested in bidding on it. But if the little line is just a factory short wandering line on the surface, and there are no hidden issues, this seems to be a great R Lalique Vase and a wonderful Rene Lalique design in the most preferred color (well, red or cased electric blue might be most preferred:).

Update on April 30th: The seller has reported the following:

Question: Hii. The swirl…. can you feel it, does it go all the way thru to the inside, and does it reflect light as a crack would? Thanks

Answer: Hi, Its a tiny crack on surface, doesn’t even come close to going all the way through. Maybe as thick as a small sewing pin. Maybe smaller. You can only tell its a crack when you look at a veery hard side angle, otherwise it looks like a dark line. Seems to be a factory thing to me but I’m no expert. Its not sharp, as if it was still hot glass and seeped into space. Its a tiny thing but when in your hands i think you will understand. Thanks,. mike

Answer: Hi, it only reflects light when you look at it from an extreme angle. Its tiny but there. Hope this helps. Thanks, mike

Rene Lalique Perfume Bottle Camelia by Lalique for D’Orsay Appears

April 24th, 2009

Rene Lalique Camelia Perfume Bottle Circa 1912Rene Lalique Perfume Bottle Camelia for D’Orsay Appears at Auction: A wonderful and pretty rare R Lalique perfume bottle Camelia circa 1912 has appeared at auction online. It started at $9.99 no reserve, and is already over $800. The seller, as is usual in the circumstances, apparently did not know the true value of this perfume bottle, did not know the name of the bottle, and did not know the bottle was the work of Rene Lalique. He has been inundated with requests to stop the auction by buyers hoping to get a bargain. Humorously, the seller posted the following in his ad: “I have been asked to end this early and will not! So please stop asking me!” Smart seller!

Rene Lalique Camelia Pair of Perfume Bottles Circa 1912This bottle was reportedly made in two sizes, 9 and 10.5 cm, both of which appeared in the Lalique Sale in Paris at Boisgirard and Associes on December 6, 2005 which was the liquidation of many great items from the Marie Claude Lalique estate. At that sale, the smaller bottle was listed at 9.5 cm, but as you can see from the photo in that 2005 sale catalogue which is shown here, it appears there is more than a 1 cm difference in the heights of the two bottles. Also, neither bottle was signed, just like the one currently online. It appears from the measurement in the ad for this Camelia, that this is the larger of the two.

Here is a link to a saved/cached image version of the original Rene Lalique Camelia Perfume Bottle listing online. We’ve also listed this bottle in our R Lalique Worldwide Auction Section. And don’t forget as you take a look, there is a rare matching box that goes with this bottle! The two pieces together making quite a nice display if you can acquire them.

The jewelry of Rene Lalique is not as well documented as his glass works. So we thought we would highlight some of this fake R Lalique jewellery (a hat tip for our British readers) in the hopes that unsuspecting buyers may be spared an expensive education! Below are the auction listing links (3 current, one ended), and of course, the four photos in this post, all of which are being marketed as period R Lalique jewelry; all of which are fakes. You gotta love the seller of several of these items: ALL SALES ARE FINAL. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS AND PAYMENT IS DUE IMMEDIATELY”! Really? Or as an alert contributor to the R Lalique Police Section (where all four of these fake R Lalique items are listed) pointed out to us, the other seller says: “I Will Divide Up The Money Among My TREE Children!” Hmmmmmm. Those fans of Hill Street Blues know the old maxim well ……”Be Careful Out There!” Don’t want to fall out of your tree!

PS. Of course, over at the R Lalique Books Library, there are an amazing number of Rene Lalique reference books for R Lalique Jewelry, including the bible of R Lalique Jewelry: Rene Lalique Schmuck und Objects d’art 1890-1910 By Sigrid Barten which has over 1700 photos and is found in the Modern R Lalique Books Section, as well a good number of Rene Lalique jewelry exhibition books and catalogs, and R Lalique jewelry auction catalogues as well.

Lalique Rarity: The Lalique Vase Agadir – Unusual Post War Lalique Vase That Is Factory Signed R.Lalique!

March 28th, 2009

Lalique Agadir VaseLalique Agadir Vase DrawingLalique Agadir Vase SignatureLalique Paimpol VaseLalique Rare Vase Appears With A Good R.Lalique Signature: The Lalique Vase Agadir! Ring any bells? It’s Lalique Vase model number 12.245. It appears in the catalogue right after the Lalique Vase Everest, which of course is number 12.244, and right before the Lalique Vase Vincennes, number 12.246. But the catalogue is not the Catalogue Raisonne. It’s a 1950’s Lalique Cristal-Paris catalogue. But here it is, in the flesh (a LOT of flesh we might add), with what by all appearances is a good R.Lalique signature. And this sure seems like the sister vase to the Cristal Lalique Vase Paimpol (shown in the last photo below), which is model number 12.240, and which appears in the book Lalique Glass, by Nicholas Dawes on Page 105! As you have likely surmised, this excellent book, among its other virtues, is the favorite Lalique book of Mr. Dawes! Mr. Dawes states in the book that the Paimpol vase had a wheelcut R.Lalique signature. And we have word coming out of a meeting of Oracles held to discuss this very subject, that one of the Oracles that participated in the meeting confirmed beyond doubt the authenticity of the R.Lalique signature on the Paimpol Vase!

So, read from the Ebay Listing – Item Number 310131680828 on the Agadir: “This old signed R. LALIQUE FRANCE vase is 10¾” (27 cm) high and weight app. 27 pounds!!!! The diameter is 11 5/8″ at its widest point and the top diameter is 8¼” large.”

Do you have any R Lalique vases that weigh in at one pound per centimeter? This vase doesn’t really seem to fit nicely into the Archers, Perruches, Serpent, Alicante style, that’s for sure, but other late vases also don’t fit very well either. Of course this one seems particularly ill fitting! What else? It’s heavy like crystal and seems a lot more Mark than Rene in overall style and design.

Hmmmm. All things considered, when the fog of history, the fog of war, and possibly the fog of adult beverages prevent total illumination, it’s best to go back to basic precepts, one of which is: With R Lalique, the signature cannot authenticate the piece! This is true even when the signature is “authentic”! So unless documentation appears in the future showing otherwise, what we have is a post war Cristal Lalique Vase made after the death of Rene Lalique, with an R.Lalique signature applied at the factory.

And for those of you who were wondering this whole time what the name Agadir means, it’s the name of a good sized Atlantic port city in Morocco. The city was made famous in 1911 by the Agadir Crises, in which France, Germany, and England all played a part, and which lead to France establishing a protectorate over Morocco.

Now, the most important question: Who among you has a glass shelf that can hold this monster vase?
