Note: Biskra is the capital city of the Biskra Province in Algeria. It has a population of over 300,000 (2007). The city has a nickname of "The Door of the Desert" because the city is located at the top of the Saharan Desert about 250 miles south-southeast of Algiers. In Lalique's time, Biskra was a scene of rebellion against French rule, the French having taken over the city in 1844 and turning it into a garrison. But it also later became a go-to destination as a spa town (owing to ancient springs nearby) and a hub for up and coming political figures, artists, writers and others. Around the period surrounding the turn of the century in 1900, figures from all over the world such as Oscar Wilde, Scott Fitzgerald, Karl Marx, Francis James, and Henri Matisse made the journey to Biskra. Here is a link to the 1907 Matisse oil on canvas Blue Nude - Souvenir de Biskra that is in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland. The city has a long and well-documented history dating back to before the Common Era. But its history during Lalique's lifetime was intertwined with and most impacted by the French rule of Algeria.
