Note: Khédive was the title of the viceroys (representatives) for the Sultan of Turkey that ruled Egypt from 1867 to 1914. So for example, it was a Turkish appointed Khédive that oversaw the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The time of the Khédives in Egypt encompassed most of René Lalique's first 55 years.

Also Note: In 1924 Lalique created two similar boxes. This box has Egyptian themed sides on the bottom and a clear lid that has only a thin decoration around the top edge. The center of the lid is undecorated. The similar box is Fouad. Fouad has the Egyptian themed bottom and a lid with the same edge decoration but also a likeness of Fouad I (Sultan and later King of Egypt) in the center.
