Note: Fontenay is the name of the famous abbey just outside the town of Montbard (population 7000 as of 2007) in Burgandy. It's a 2-hour train ride or about 2 and 1/2 hours by car southeast of Paris. The abbey was started by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in 1188. It's the oldest Cistercian abbey in the world. The Cistercians were a stricter branch of the Benedictines as founded in 1098. They still exist today, though in both a strict (Trappists) and a somewhat relaxed form. The abbey sits in an incredible park-like surrounding and is a Unesco World Heritage sight.
