Rene Lalique Styx Perfume Bottle information and photos at RLalique.com are tied together on this main Styx Perfume Bottles page. Past and future auctions, historical details, sales, copies, reproductions, articles and more are all accessible from here. This page grows as more info is added to the website. Note: In Greek mythology, Styx is a river named after a goddess. The goddess was the first of the deities to rush to the aid of Zeus during the Titan war. The river that bears her name forms the boundary between earth and the underworld called Hades. It's across the river Styx that the ferryman Charon would escort the souls of the dead to the afterlife.
Also Note: There are 2 versions of this bottle for the Coty fragrance Styx (both shown here), and a 3rd version catalogued separately for Maison Lalique called Carnette Guepes. In the early Styx version, the entire top, wasps and all, is one big stopper. The pistil sticking up in the middle of the top has a short stem and if removed (to use as a dauber for the perfume), the bottle is still closed because the stopper is still in place. This pistil has what we'll call the "bunch of grapes" design at the top and it's fitted in a shallow divot in the middle of the stopper. Many of these are found glued in place to keep from losing them. These bottles are about 11.5 cm tall. In the 2nd version for Coty, the wasps are part of the bottle, and the pistil, now with a different design on the top that does not resemble a bunch of grapes, is the stopper. There is a hole in the center of the top of the bottle that the longer stem of this pistil/stopper goes into to seal the bottle. This bottle is about 12.5 cm tall. The 3rd and last version, Carnette Guepes, looks very much like the early Coty bottle, being the same size and having a similar bunch of grapes pistil. But it functions like the 2nd Styx bottle because the pistil is the stopper.

NOTE: There are other different R. Lalique perfume bottles labeled Styx! If you are looking for a Styx labeled bottle that does not match this one, go to the catalogue's main Perfume Bottle page at the link above and find your bottle! It may have a different model name as many bottles were used for more than one fragrance. For bottles made for perfumeries (as opposed to Maison Lalique Bottles sold empty), typically but not always, we call the bottle by the first fragrance it was used for. Also different perfumeries sometimes used the same fragrance name.
