Note: Oiseau de feu is French for Firebird. The Firebird is the subject of many legends and stories across many cultures. They all have in common a magical usually brightly colored bird from a far-away place that can be both a blessing and a curse if mistreated (usually by being captured). The Firebird is a big part of Slavic folklore. In Lalique's time in 1910 came what may be the most famous of all re-tellings of the Firebird story in the form of a massive ballet production by Sergei Diaghilev of the Russian Ballet (Ballet Russe). None other than Igor Stravinsky wrote the music for what became an extremely popular ballet. The Firebird legend was further spread during the same time period by the French writer Edmund Dulac in his 1916 book Fairy Tales Of The Allied Nations. Lalique would have undoubtedly been aware of both of these re-tellings, in addition to other versions of the same story. And as with so many mythological figures, Lalique would apply his own artistic interpretation to create a unique and magnificent decorative object that embodies the legend at a glance.
