Rene Lalique Narkiss Perfume Bottle information and photos at RLalique.com are tied together on this main Narkiss Perfume Bottles page. Past and future auctions, historical details, sales, copies, reproductions, articles and more are all accessible from here. This page grows as more info is added to the website. Note: Narkiss is the name of a story written by the French author Jean Lorrain in the late 1800's. It was dedicated to "...my friend Lalique". The story is about the Greek mythological figure Narcissus (the guy that fell in love with his own image). Narkiss is Lorrain's name for the Egyptian prince who is the central figure in her version of the myth. The story was first published just before before 1900 and was reprinted in 1902. In 1908 finely bound illustrated reprints were issued. It was a popular story in its day and is said to have inspired the Russian Ballet Narcisse that first premiered at Casino Monte-Carlo in April of 1911 with none other than the dancing legend Vaslav Nijinsky in the title role. You can view examples of the book including photos of various pages at the Narkiss Book model page.
Also Note: There are 4 variants of the Narkiss Perfume Bottle. The one shown here is the 2nd smallest and most common at about 10 cm. It has a flower with thinner and smaller spaces between the petals (both absolutely and proportionally) than the Narkiss-3 version, and a stopper with 2 butterflies. Narkiss-2 is a 4 cm sample bottle and the smallest of the four. It's also the only variant where the petals remain separate all the way out to the edge of the design. Narkiss-3 is the 2nd largest at 12 cm with wider spaces between the flower petals than the one shown here, and a 4 (instead of 2) butterfly stopper. There is also Narkiss-4, a display bottle that appears to be nearly identical to this 10 cm Narkiss model. The big difference is the size at approximately 22 cm. A careful review of the design might identify other differences, but with the large size it's not likely to be confused.
Also Note: Examples of this bottle from the original mold have a molded R.L. signature and the molded word BREVETÉ (French for patented) to the underside.
Also Note: Compare the shape and design on this bottle to the Soleil Vase from the same year Narkiss was first introduced.

NOTE: There are other different R. Lalique perfume bottles labeled Narkiss! If you are looking for a Narkiss labeled bottle that does not match this one, go to the catalogue's main Perfume Bottle page at the link above and find your bottle! It may have a different model name as many bottles were used for more than one fragrance. For bottles made for perfumeries (as opposed to Maison Lalique Bottles sold empty), typically but not always, we call the bottle by the first fragrance it was used for. Also different perfumeries sometimes used the same fragrance name.
