Note: Mulhouse is a city in eastern France near the border with both Germany and Switzerland. It's around a 5-hour drive east-southeast of Paris and about 250 crow flies miles. Mulhouse was part of the Holy Roman Empire into the 14th century when it became and remained an independent city until it voted to become a part of France in 1798. It's the 2nd largest city in Alsace after Strasbourg (only 60 miles away) with a population of over 100,000 (2017) and a metro population of around 300,000. The city has a rich history in textiles and heavy manufacturing, and is sometimes referred to as the French Manchester (of course we can only assume the French refer to Manchester as the English Mulhouse). It's changed hands a few times between the Germans and the French in the last century or two but retains much of its ancient charm. Historically its most famous offspring was Albert Dreyfus who was born there in 1859 just six years before the birth of Rene Lalique.
