Note: In Lalique's time, Languedoc was a province in south-central France with its capital in Toulouse. After his death, Languedoc was divided up during the 50 year period beginning in 1956. However in 2016 about 80% of the former Languedoc area became part of the region named Occitanie. Coincidentally, in the former Languedoc region there was and is a cactus named Pinya De Rosa that looks a lot like this vase! The region also had palm trees that Lalique used in the design of the Languedoc Chandelier. Closer to home for Americans, the Languedoc was also the name of the 90 gun flagship of Admiral d'Estaing and the French fleet that arrived in the American colonies in 1778 to help the colonists in their fight against the British. The ship was badly damaged but returned again in 1781 taking part in the Battle of the Chesapeake that sealed the fate of General Cornwallis at Yorktown where he surrendered in what turned out to be the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. In 2014 the French Navy revived the name Languedoc for the one of their new Aquitane-class frigates. See The Entire Catalogue Of: Rene Lalique Vases
