Note: The Palais des Tuileries was the name of a huge new royal palace built in Paris in the 1500's on the right bank of the Seine in front of the Louvre. The palace was burned in 1871 during civil strife in Paris when Lalique was only 11 years old. The ruins were removed in the early 1880's and that opened up an unobstructed view from the Louvre all the way to the Arc de Triomphe (and in the modern era also to the Arch of La Défense). Today the wonderful Jardin des Tuileries (now a public park) is all that remains of the great palace. The garden dates to 1564 having been created by the Italian noblewoman Catherine de' Medici. Catherine was the Queen Consort to King Henry II from 1547 to 1559 and thus the mother of the French kings Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III. For the first two kids she basically ran France as the Dowager Queen, Mother, or Regent of each, and may have been the most powerful woman in all of Europe during her lifetime. Catherine's garden is frequented by lots of birds, especially in the winter, and it's hard to imagine that Lalique did not visit the park at least once his lifetime. Here is more information about the palace and the garden. See The Entire Catalogue Of: Rene Lalique Vases
