Note: Tournai is a city in western Belgium that was the first capital of France. It's about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive north/north-east from Paris. The city is over 2000 years old and at times has been controlled by the Romans, the Brits, the Germans, the Spanish, the Austrians, the Dutch, and the French of course. Tournai was the capital of the Frankish Empire for around 50 years up until 486, when the capital was moved to Paris by Clovis I, the first king of the Salian Franks. In the early 1800's it became part of the United Netherlands and within a short time thereafter, Belgium. However, both French and the French dialect Picard are still spoken in the city. Tournai was heavily damaged after the start of World War II but has been studiously rebuilt. The place is so rich in history. Here's a view of Notre-Dame de Tournai!
