Rene Lalique Vase Thibet:
FINAL UPDATE: We've heard back from the auction house. We strongly recommend you do not bid on anything with this auction house, ever. RED ALERT: We've left up this auction listing only so you can read this statement. And we changed the auction date from 2-14 to 2-17 so it will appear here longer than it would if we hadn't: We found in our worldwide auction searches that they appear to be "frontrunning" Ebay auctions without mentioning that they don't have possession, ownership, or even the right to sell the items they are "selling". Basically they find an Ebay listing, and they take the pictures and info from that listing and advertise it in their own auction on their own website or their website directs you to online auction sites such as AuctionZip/Invaluable, where there is a low estimate for the lot of around double the Ebay Buy-It-Now price. And obviously the whole plan relies on the buyers at their auction not knowing what they are doing. So again, they are auctioning off items they do not own, items that have not been consigned to them for sale, that there is no assurance they can aquire, that are not in their possession, and that they have no control over. What could wrong :) The Thibet vase in this listing is for sale on EBay for $3500 Buy-It-Now. We talked to the actual owner of the Thibet, the Ebay seller, and he confirmed he has nothing to do with Activity Auctions. Frontrunning would be the best case, that if you buy from them then they will attempt to buy the piece and get it to you. The worst case... you can figure that out. We have inquired with the auction house about their business model and practices and we'll update this post if/when we have more information. We checked another of their items coming up on Feb 17th and sure enough it's on EBay for a buy it now of roughtly half their low estimate. The Ebay seller of that R. Lalique Tableware lot is in Japan. Hard to imagine how this goes well for buyers who did not know the auction house doesn't have the items in-hand just thinking about customs duties and the time involved in getting it from the Ebay seller (if they can) and then getting it to you, accurate condition reports, possible damage in shipment etc. and everything working out great for the lucky winning bidders at the Activity auction. We checked a couple more items that were all found on Ebay under similar circumstances and stopped checking.
