Note: Bernard Palissy (1510 - 1589) was a French potter who became famous for his pottery that featured naturalistic relief decorations of things such as crabs, lobsters, fish, and yes.... snails. His "pièces rustiques" were intended for decorative purposes and not for everyday use. His works were widely reproduced starting around 1849. At the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, Minton's Victorian majolica was exhibited under the name "Palissy ware" and Palissy is known as the mother of what is now called Majolica. His works are housed in many museums such as the Louvre, the Getty, and the Musée de Cluny. For more information and to see examples of his work, check out the Palissy page at the Getty and the Palissy page at the Louvre. See The Entire Catalogue Of: Rene Lalique Vases
