Note: Marcellin Berthelot was born in Paris in 1827. He was an inventor, a politician, and a world-famous chemist, who released the rights to all his discoveries so that anyone could use and build upon them. He succeeded Louis Pasteur as the Permanent Secretary of the physical science section of the French Academy of Sciences in 1889. Berthelot died in 1907 at the age of 79. He was so well known and revered in France by the time he died, that according to Britannica.com, most French towns named a street or square after him.
