Note: Marcellin Berthelot was born in Paris in 1827. He was an inventor, a politician, and a world-famous chemist, who released the rights to all his discoveries so that anyone could use and build upon them. He succeeded Louis Pasteur as the Permanent Secretary of the physical science section of the French Academy of Sciences in 1889. Berthelot died in 1907 at the age of 79. He was so well known and revered in France by the time he died, that according to Britannica.com, most French towns named a street or square after him.

Also Note: This medallion was issued in 1927 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Berthelot's birth, just as Lalique had done for the 100 year birth anniversary of Pasteur in 1922.
