Note: Ferrières-en-Brie is a small town near Paris that is only about 2 and 1/2 square miles in size. It has a population of approximately 3500 (2017). People who live there are called Ferrièrois. It's only a 30-minute drive almost due east from Paris. The town has a couple of landmark buildings. One is the great old Église Saint Rémy or Saint Remy Church. And the second is one heck of a castle, the Château de Ferrières. It was designed by a British architect for Baron James de Rothschild, the founder of the French branch of the famous family. The 5-year build-out of the castle was completed in 1859, the year before Lalique's birth. The German Emperor Wilhelm I upon visiting the château is reported to have said, "No Kings could afford this. It could only belong to a Rothschild." It was built with 80 suites for guests and the grand opening party in 1862 was attended by more notables than can be counted including the first President of France Napoleaon III. In 1975 Guy de Rothschild donated the property to the University of Paris. These images will give you a feel for the place. See The Entire Catalogue Of: Rene Lalique Vases
