Note: Epsom is the name of a town in England about 14 miles southwest of London. Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) is named after this former spa town. It was originally made by boiling down the mineral waters from springs in Epsom. Epsom is also the home of the Epsom Downs Racecourse where 2 of the 5 English Classic horse races are held: The Derby Stakes and The Oaks. These races were first run in 1780 and 1779 respectively. The "Derby" as it is popularly known, is the richest horse race in all of England, and has given its name to other classic horse races around the world (including the one with mint juleps and blue grass). Rene Lalique spent over a year in the London area between 1878 and 1880 and would have undoubtedly been aware of Epsom and its racecourse. See the wonderful William Powell Frith 1856-1858 painting The Derby Day in the collection of Tate Britain (formerly the National Gallery of British Art) since 1859.
