Note: Edelweiss is a European mountain plant that has small flowers surrounded by white bracts, and grey-green downy leaves. It's a conflation of 2 German words from the mid-1800's: "edel" meaning noble and "weiss" meaning white. Edelweiss is the national flower of Austria, and was made famous by a song in the 1965 movie classic The Sound of Music. The film was the highest grossing film of all time (at that time). It had over 280 million worldwide admissions in theaters. The movie was adapted of course from the late 1950's musical of the same name with songs and lyrics by the legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein.
