Note: Deauville is a seaside resort town in Normandy that's a 2 and 1/2 to 3 hour drive northeast of Paris, or about 110 crow flies miles. The population is around 3500 (2017). The town is recorded in various references dating back to the 11th century. In the mid 1800's a railroad was built from Paris to Deauville, the first casino was built, and the Hippodrome de la Touques (now Deauville-La Touques) was built for horse racing. From that time to the present day, interrupted only by wars, the town has become more and more known as a high-end tourist destination and high society getaway. All of the activity has been helped along because of Deauville's location as the closest seaside resort to Paris. Deauville is also known for its relevance to Proust's greatest work "In Search of Lost Time". Proust lived on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris from 1907 to 1919 and took the train to Normandy many times. He would almost certainly have crossed paths with Rene Lalique during his lifetime, and in death they both ended up in the same place. Here you can see Proust's gravesite at Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. And here is the wonderful 1865 oil on wood by the French painter Eugène Boudin "Bathing Time at Deauville" that is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. It was painted just 2 years after the opening of the railway from Paris. See The Entire Catalogue Of: Rene Lalique Vases
