Note: In the Alsace city of Colmar near the French/German border, there is a famous synagogue (with a bell tower!) that dates to around 1840. The Jewish community in the town dates further back to at least the 1200's when the town was part of Germany. Owing to its location, it has changed countries many times. In the modern era, it was made part of Germany in 1871, returned to France after WW I, taken again by Germany in 1940, and returned to France after WW II. Colmar has a sunny and dry climate, and is known as the capital of Alsace winemaking. To this day there are beautiful old parts of the city that don't look all that different than they might have appeared hundreds of years ago. Colmar has about 70,000 people (as of 2016). Here are some great pictures of Colmar as seen from the Logelbach Canal.
