Note: Chantilly is a small city of around 11,000 people (2017) about 25 miles north-northeast from the center of Paris. The town is surrounded by a forest of the same name, and is home to the Hippodrome de Chantilly, a well known horse racing track that opened in 1834, about 26 years before the birth of Rene Lalique. Owing to the existence of the racetrack, Chantilly and the surrounding areas constitute the largest horse-training region in all of France. The track hosts 1 of the 5 Classic Races in France each year, the Prix du Jockey Club. The Living Museum of the Horse, a busy tourist destination was created at the track in 1982. There is also the incredible Château du Chantilly, which was originally built in the 1500's, and totally rebuilt during Lalique's lifetime. The Musée Condé, housing one of the great collections of paintings in all of France is in the Château. The town gives its name to Crème chantilly (aka Chantilly cream), as another name for whipped cream. And one more namesake is the handmade Chantilly Lace that began production in the town in the 1600's. Here is a series of Château images starting with a view of the original building.
