Note: The Camargue is an area in France running south from Arles to the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhône River splits into two parts at Arles and creates Western Europe's largest river delta between Arles and the Med. Only the Nile River delta is a larger Mediterranean delta. The Camargue comprises the Rhône River delta bordered on the east by the Grande Rhône and on the west by the Petite Rhône. And more marshlands extend further west of the Petit Rhône into a substantial area known as the Petite-Camargue. Even to this day, a large portion of the entire area is either lake or marsh, and much of it is protected Réserve. Over 400 species of birds live there including the up to 5-foot tall greater flamingos. And yes, they are pink. But for why we are explaining all this, of even greater interest than the flamingos are the horses. The famous Camargue horses that are indigenous to the area are used by local cowboys (called gardians) for a variety of tasks including to herd the black Camargue bulls that are used in bullfighting. They are relatively small horses measuring up to the same 5-feet tall at the withers as the Flamingos. Camargue horses are almost always referred to as white. And while most have that appearance, in reality almost all are gray. They have black skin under a coat of hair that turns completely white, as they get older.
