Note: Bammako is the original spelling for Bamako, the capital and largest city of Mali. Mali is a landlocked country located in northwest Africa, much of it in the Saharan Desert. In the African language of Bambara, a language understood to at least some degreen by around 80% of Mali's population, Bammako means crocodile pond. Mali came under French control round 1900 as part of French Sudan but achieved independence in 1960. Ignoring France's overseas regions and possessions, Mali is more than twice the size of the France you see on maps of Europe. The official language of Mali is still French, though in addition to Bambara, there are something like 40 other African languages spoken there as well. Mali is a Western leaning country politically, and France and Mali have cordial relations. To this day (2021) France still maintains thousands of French troops in Mali. Those troops were introduced in 2013 to help Mali fight back extremists that have taken over various parts of Mali from time to time. See The Entire Catalogue Of: Rene Lalique Vases
