Lalique Perfume Bottles: A Reader Asks – Does This Lalique Atomizer Have A Name?

October 2nd, 2008

A reader emailed in this photo, asking if this atomizer had been identified. This is a great looking atomizer, and we told our man from down under that we’d post it up here for him and see if any of our users have information that can help him. We’re looking forward to seeing any comments or emails from you all that might shed some light on the identity of what for now is the Mad Max Thunderdome Atomizer ……… the atomizer with no name :).

Ambre De Siam Perfume at Rago Auctions sells for $25,200

September 29th, 2008

Rene Lalique Ambre De Siam Perfume BottleThe rare perfume bottle Ambre De Siam appeared at the Rago Arts and Auction Center yesterday in their two day Craftsman Auction Weekend Sale, along with around 10 other R Lalique items. The bottle, which was in very good condition except for a small chip on the bottom of the stem of the stopper, rarely appears at auction. It’s a classic and innovative R Lalique design that brings out not just the R Lalique collectors, but also the larger perfume bottle collecting crowd. In the end, the bottle surpassed its $5000-$6000 pre-sale estimate, and worked it’s way up from $5000 to $21,000, which made the premium inclusive total just over $25,000. The Oracle says that this bottle is the source of some historical confusion, originally appearing in some literature as an in-house RLalique bottle. Evidence exists that his bottle was sold by Volnay. The stopper itself exists as cachet. A good result for one of the great Rene Lalique designs in near original condition.

Rene Lalique Vase Bacchantes with Tragic Damage

September 27th, 2008

The photo in this post says it all. The Ebay seller says it would sell for thousands if not broken. It sounds like they have no idea. A total tragedy to see such a great RLalique item go down the tubes. Unfortunately, it’s likely that every day, somewhere in the world, a great piece of RLalique glass gets destroyed or severely damaged by accident. And with both natural and man made disasters (earthquakes, riots, war) likely taking out plenty of pieces as well, it’s all the more important that those of us entrusted as custodians of the works of the great Rene Lalique, take special care with them, so that we can usher these wonderful works of art into the future and transfer them intact to the next generation of collectors and enthusiasts.

For more information about the great vases of Rene Lalique, see the Lalique Vases section of the Rene Lalique Biography.

A Few Great Library Additions

September 18th, 2008

Nil Melior Pre-War Auto Accessory Brochure Featuring Rene Lalique Mascots at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York CityCheck out our New Arrivals Section in the RLalique Library. We’ve added a few great items, including three wonderful Japanese Exhibition Catalogues and a pre-war sales brochure by Nil Melior. Nil Melior sold high end auto accessories and had a retail shop in New York City at the Waldorf-Astoria at Park and Lex. This 24 page brochure shows 8 different RLalique mascots including Victoire, and has the prices that were being charged at the time for each item. We have another very similar but not identical pre-war Nil Melior brochure also listed for sale in the Library. Period material from RLalique retailers is extremely rare, especially priced brochures. Who would have thought you could go to the Waldorf to buy RLalique mascots?

New RLalique At Auction Section Layout

September 17th, 2008

We are moving to a new and better looking RLalique at Auction Section, that allows us to feature some items at the top, and also gives us the option to put a picture next to the description of the upcoming RLalique items. The descriptions of each upcoming auction contains identical information to the old layout, it’s just not segregated into a bunch of little cells. This new layout is a work in progress in that we have not added any auction photos next to the listings as of this morning. The revision is the result of several user requests to make the upcoming auction information less busy looking, and also to make the links at the top which take you to a featured upcoming item, or to the Lalique Auctions Past Page, or whatever else we might want to point out to you, to be more recognizable. Hopefully you will like the changes, but either way, if you have a strong opinion, please let us know. Both the text and the photos of the featured items at the top are clickable links that will take you to the relevant item. The one drawback to the new layout is that it takes a little longer to scroll thru the auctions, as the auction info is in bigger cells so that photos can be added when/if desired. Also, we reprogrammed the Lalique Auctions Past Page of sold auction items, adding customized searches, small views of the most recent auctions past, and a link to the entire history we have of past auctions in date order. Again, this was a user request. RLalique.com is the best source of information on RLalique anywhere in the world, and we are working hard to make it even better. There will be further enhancements over the next couple of months, including up to two new sections to further guide RLalique collectors and enthusiasts and to bring you even more helpful and unique information about our mutual passion for the works of Rene Lalique. We know your time is valuable, and we want to make sure that the time you spend with us is well spent. Thanks to all of you for your support, and we hope to see you hanging around the Blog from time to time.

Auction Law And Ethics: Sleep Well! The 4th Article on Bid Rigging and Collusion At Auctions

September 12th, 2008

Sleep WellThe Maine Antique Digest has a monthly column dealing with Auction Law and Ethics. Each article is written by an expert auction lawyer. The current series deals with bid rigging and collusion among bidders. We have been reprinting the articles in this series here at RLalique.com with the permission of the author and the assistance of the Maine Antique Digest so that they will be available directly on our website for our fellow RLalique enthusiasts. Four articles in this Bid Rigging Series have appeared, all of which are linked in our Articles of Interest page here at RLalique.com. This page can also be accessed from the link in our Navigation Section on the right hand side of any RLalique Blog page. You can also access the 4th article in the series directly by clicking on the title – Auction Law and Ethics: Sleep Well. We agree with the author that when bidders collude, it is a serious problem for all auction participants, and that all bidders at auctions should be aware of the laws about bid rigging and collusion. We highly recommend these articles to you and welcome your comments.

Server Outage For Several Hours – Our Apologies

September 10th, 2008

Our Web Host (Network Solutions) had some problems last night, the result being that our server was down for some time and the site was not accessible without even a “temporarily unavailable” page appearing. We went with Network Solutions when we first started because they have a reputation for reliability, and we didn’t expect this could happen. For those of you that tried to access the site and found it unavailable, we’re sorry for any inconvenience it has caused. We also see that many of our search rankings went in the tank this morning for the first time ever, and don’t know if it’s related or not to the fact that the search services would have been unable to find the site (see “Dumb Luck” posts for discussion on our search standing….  well, our former search standing:). Anyway, we’re working with Network Solutions to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again. And of course the good news is we are up and running, several new worldwide auctions have already been posted this morning in our RLalique At Auction Section, and some new For Sale Items will be coming online today in the RLalique For Sale Section including the wonderful Six Figurines et Masques Vase shown here.

U.S. Tax Law Change Will Affect Many R Lalique Sellers

September 5th, 2008

I.R.S.There is a little noticed provision in the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, an act which we have also seen called the Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008, and which is also known as H.R. (House Resolution) 3221. If they were going with three names, why not Larry, Curly, and Moe? At least we could remember those names! Anyway, this provision will affect many individuals and small businesses that are casual or not so casual sellers of all kinds of items, as well as dealers and retailers. This bill became law on July 30th of this year. Stuck in among its more publicized features is a provision that does not take effect for over two years. But, starting in 2011, the law provides that all processors of credit or debit card charges must report the proceeds which sellers receive to the IRS if the seller has at least 200 transactions that total over $20,000 in a tax year. This would include not just banks that process credit card payments for retailers, but also companies that process online credit card payments such as Paypal, and online store type operations such as Google Check-Out. The effect of this new law will be to give affected sellers (for example an Ebay seller of R.Lalique) a 1099 with a copy to the Internal Revenue Service, showing the proceeds the seller has received during the year. Of course, the vast majority of sellers (sellers of R.Lalique or otherwise) that properly report all their income should have nothing to worry about. You should also know that credit card processors and others affected will need Taxpayer ID’s from sellers. If a seller does not provide a Taxpayer ID, the processor is required to withhold 28% of the proceeds. No, that is not a mis-print; it’s 28%. Of course, would it really bother you if your 2011 1099 from your credit card processor looked like the following?

R Lalique Seller 2011 1099

So sellers should expect to hear from outfits such as Paypal requesting their Taxpayer ID, assumedly before the law takes effect. And certainly more details will appear as the time for implementation approaches.  We have two final notes. First, 700 pages, three names, and no hint of this provision in any of those names :). And second, this is not tax advice. It is a layman’s summary of a small part of a complicated and important law that is certainly incomplete, and maybe even partly incorrect. So, consider this a “heads up” and NOT advice (be it tax, marital, or free).

3 Rene Lalique Jewelry Drawings at Christie’s NY Total $14,000

September 4th, 2008

Rene Lalique Orchid Buckle DrawingAt Christie’s New York on September 3rd, 3 wonderful original Rene Lalique drawings appeared in Christie’s 3 Day Interiors Sale. The Rene Lalique original drawings were for a Grasshopper Necklace, an Orchid Buckle, and a Swallows Necklace. The drawings, selling as three separate lots, made a total of $14,000 including buyer’s premium, against combined estimates of $6,000 to $9,000. There are a decent number of these original drawings around, but they always sell well. And of course, the real jewel is when the owner of the original jewelry item obtains the original R Lalique drawing of that specific item and reunites the pair.
